I recently happened to read the sentence

This line of research has difficulty explaining the empirically
documented premium.

I was wondering whether it should be "difficulty explaining" or "difficulty in explaining".

ngram results show both are frequently used, the former being more contemporary.

  • I have no problem at all with difficulty explaining. My problem with the sentence is empirically documented premium. That three-word phrase contains both confusion and redundancy. And even if we keep only premium, I don't understand why research would be required to explain it, much less fail to do so.
