Han erstatta den tidlegare trommisen John Silver i august 1969. Han er med på albumet Trespass samt plateboksen Genesis Archive 1967-75 . Han vart i august 1970 erstatta av Phil Collins. Det var lite som var kjend om kvar Mayhew forsvann etter han slutta i Genesis. Honorara hans for Trespass vart ikkje henta og det var spekulasjonar om at han var død eller sakna. I 1982 flytta han til Australia der han jobba som snikkar. I 2006 deltok han på ein Genesis-konvensjon i London i lag med Anthony Phillips og Steve Hackett, og spelte trommer med dette bandet på «The Knife». Mayhew
