In the Google Docs MLA format template, some paragraphs with the “Lorem Ipsum” filler text are indented while others are not. What distinguishes these paragraph from other and why are some of them indented while others are not?

The MLA guide doesn't specify paragraph indentation guidelines. I would be careful in assuming that a third-party template makes choices that always go back to what MLA asks for.
