This cross-stitch carpet was created by me in winters 1986/1987. It has hung in my living-room all these long years. I have always had deep feelings towards this work, and only now I have found why. It took me more than fifteen years to return to doing artwork, this time in painting. It’s amazing that only now I’m penetrating my affinity towards this carpet. It is obvious that unconsciously this cross-stitching is the cradle of my artwork language,. The elements and the shapes I use today in my paintings are from the same origin – an ancient one, I suppose.
When I look at this carpet I identify my style and I comprehend the inner source of my primeval inherence.
The fact that the material of this carpet came from my late mother is crucial for me. I believe that Mum’s presence is the core and the force of my creativity.
Mum was a talented handcrafter. Knitting was her favorite. So, leftover wool had been hoarded through years of knitting, and I felt an urge to make something with it. I embroidered it directly on the material, without any sketch, driven by my imagination and stimulated by the colors and the challenge of the unexpected. My technique and the elements in my painting are the same.
In my work you get the feeling of symmetry, but if you look closely you find that it is actually an illusion. As in my painting so in my life, I believe that everything is more complicated at the base.
