Historie |

New York City i 1935

Dei første europearane som busette seg på det som i dag er New York City var nederlendarar. År 1626 kjøpte desse personane den sørlege delen av Manhattan av indianarane og grunnla kolonien New Amsterdam. År 1664 tok England over byen etter svak motstand frå nederlendarane. Det nye namnet vart New York etter Jakob II av England, den dåverande hertugen av York, som var med på å finansiere overtakinga.

Frå år 1785 til 1790 var New York hovudstad i USA. Under denne tida hadde byen 30 000 innbyggarar og var med det den største i Nord-Amerika. Dette talet vart dobla om lag kvart tiande år. Allereie i 1870 var innbyggartalet éin million. For mange innvandrarar vart New York det første inntrykket av USA. Ellis Island var i lang tid hovudhamna for emigrantar.

Det var på Manhattan i New York at tvillingtårna World Trade Center vart ramma av terroristangrepet den 11. september 2001.
