How to write a conversation with a sick character who is coughing [on hold]

I'm writing a story and the mom of my character chronically sick. I don't really know how to write realistic and good conversations with her. I feel that using cough cough would sound kind of cheap. Could you please provide me good examples of conversations with chronically ill characters that cough.

I suggest you use the narrator's voice to describe how the mother's coughing made it difficult for her to talk. I agree that writing in the actual coughing would lean to the comical.
